Brushes With Desire -- My Blog

Sit A Minute

My newest painting is finally posted today. Everywhere in the Atlantic Provinces, people will tell you to "Come in, sit a minute and have a cup of tea". It is such a typical phrase that the title , of course, fits. Sit A Minute had quite a bit of detail to make it true to the image, so it took somewhat longer to complete.
There are a couple of sceneries in the process of getting done, like there usually are. I find it difficult to concentrate on just one painting at a time. It seems that the more paintings I have going at a time, the more ideas I keep getting.
The demo for Reflections of Pink and Green seems to have been very favourably received from the remarks I have had from my emails. It has been on http://artinstructionblog.com for a week and a half now and to those of you who painted it, I would enjoy seeing how it turned out. It was not without difficulty but there was a great deal to learn from it in terms of keeping your colours bright, and not working them too much so that they become muddy.

Last week I was out to The City to disperse some of my paintings in galleries and now have them in Art Sales and Rental at the Confederation Center of the Arts in Charlottetown and The Best of PEI Store in Charlottetown. There are also a few at the Kings County Memorial Hospital in Montague. A group of artists were approached to hang some of our art work on the walls of the hospital where both patients and visitors alike could look at them. I must say that the walls certainly do look much less sterile and much more cheery.

It looks like spring is finally arriving...a season of growth. Isn't it something to live in this wonderful world?

Messed up!

Reflections of Pink and Green
Hi Everyone!

To those of you who receive my e-mail newsletter, I wish to say that I am sorry that it went out as unready for the world as it was! I would like to say that it was a computer glitch or the fact that we are on only dial-up here but I have to confess that although shese things are true, it may also be the person clicking these keys. At any rate, it just did not rate and even though I am new to this world of e-mail newsletters, blogs and websites, I will try to do a much better job next time, which will be soon.

Since publishing the lesson plan for Nature’s Decorations on April 06,2008, I have had numerous artists contact me with wonderful comments on my website and also about the lesson plan itself. I wish to thank you all for taking the time to let me know how you felt. And I was absolutely elated when some of you actually did the lesson, sent me pictures of the results and asked me for critiques! That was the best compliment I could possibly have been given as an instructor.

There will soon be another lesson on the blogsite http://artinstructionblog.com. I have just completed the painting Reflections of Pink and Green. In my estimation, this is going to be quite a bit more demanding. It will contain a great deal of glazing...but I will explain that then. Even though it may be a bit challenging, anyone may try it. Learning is an uphill climb but the view is fantastic! And in order to get better we have to push ourselves to do things not tried before. Reflections of Pink and Green is on my website now.

There are two other recent entries into my works. The first is Eunice’s Tea Set. I had been to visit a newly found relative and saw her tea set in her cupboard. It is a beautiful, old set that sparkles the yellow of sunshine and gold and it just begged me to paint it. So we set it out on her table and I took the pictures I wanted for reference. This is a small painting but I am doing a more detailed one now.

The second is Winter Stream. It is a winter scene with a fresh babbling brook running through it. This was a painting I taught in my class at Community School in March.

That is it for now. Now that you are here, take the time to have a gander at some of the other paintings on the site...Happy Painting!!

Brushes with Desire

Nature's Decorations
Since January of 2001, my brushes with desire have become more and more frequent and demanding! What started as a hobby/therapy has turned into a necessity of my life. This need to create moods on canvas many times coincides with the moods of my personality, keeping me up at night sometimes but giving extreme satisfaction when a work is completed.
With this blog, I hope to let you know what new works I am producing imn my studio and to continue in what has been (hopefully) the first of a series of painting instructions to be posted on blogs. The first one I did is now on the blogsite artinstructionblog.com for the April 06, 2008 edition. It outlines the step of an acrylic painting from the first steps to the finish. As a painter, I enjoy using subjects I choose myself, things I am familiar with and sometimes I enjoy doing something which is not the norm by most standards. That is what I think that Nature's Decorations is about. It is really not something we see painted every day and hopefully other artists, collectors and aspiring artists will think the same way.
The best advice to give to anyone is to practice. Reading books and watching videos will help give you information but ithey will never give to you the same expertise that getting the paint on the brush and putting that paint onto the canvas will do for you.
I will try to get a new entry into this blog at least every week. In the meantime, please have a look at my website lorrainevatcher.com  and to artinstructionblog.com
